Custom Fan Orders - For 2024, the rate that Patrick charges is $40 an hour. This usually comes out to $80 per feather, if the owner provides their own feathers.
A custom fan order usually entails picking up the package (feathers), washing the feathers, steaming the feathers, Flatten the feathers, straightening the feathers if needed. After this part is done, bamboo skewers are glued into the stems of the feathers, and set to how it will be when done. Then, back reinforcement boards are glued on, and when dry, epoxy is put on it to reinforce the connect of the bamboo skewer and feather stems. Then, the designing of the feather work is done on one piece. Then the actual feather work is put together on the feather stems. After the feather work is done, the feather work is sealed and dried. Then, thread work is put on. Then the leather work on the stem is put on. The holder of the fan is made and finally, the fan is put together. After it drys and sets, the feathers are set so it sets perfectly in the final setting. Then, the brass connect handle is made for the handle, with the connection stamped to keep it from getting loose. The bead work is then design on graphics on computer or graph paper. Then, the actual beadwork is done with size 15 japanese seed beads. Then, the leather is cut for the fringes and twisted into a set of 12 fringes. The fringes are then installed onto the end of the fan handle. Then if the fan needs to be mailed, the fan is wrapped onto a board, and secured down. Then, package the fan, and off it goes to the post office.
For people providing their own feathers;
For a simple fan, with no threadwork or feather work, just leather on the stem. With 4 inches beaded handle and twisted leather fringes. This usually takes around 12 to 15 hours.
For the complex design fans, with feather work, threadwork, beadwork and twisted leather fringes, it usually takes 30 to 35 hours.
The cost of the material will be added to the final cost of the feather.
If Patrick is to provide the feathers, the cost of the feathers is added on to the finished fan.
